The latest news is that NVIDIA will resume shipments of "special edition" AI chips in China in the second quarter, but major customers such as Tencent and Alibaba have little interest.

Two people familiar with the matter revealed that Nvidia plans to start mass production of an AI chip designed for China in the second quarter of 2024 to comply with U.S. export regulations. One of the people said initial production will be limited and Nvidia will mainly fill orders from large customers.

It is reported that the chip that Nvidia hopes to request TSMC to deliver first in the form of a "super urgent order" may be H20. Among the three chips developed for the Chinese market after facing controls, H20 specifications are the most powerful.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), China's largest cloud companies began testing H20 samples provided by Nvidia in November last year. However, sources revealed that Alibaba and Tencent have told Nvidia that the chips ordered in 2024 will be far less than planned before the new US ban.

According to reports, due to concerns that the United States may tighten restrictions again, major Chinese customers are no longer willing to spend big money on the downgraded H20, and instead turn to testing and purchasing alternatives from domestic manufacturers.

Some analysts say that in the short term, the gap between Nvidia's downgraded GPUs and China's local alternatives has narrowed, making domestic chips more attractive to cloud computing and AI large-model customers.

According to the news, Alibaba and Tencent have decided to transfer some orders to Huawei and other companies, and rely more on their own developed ASICs. Baidu and ByteDance have also taken similar actions.

Analysts at TrendForce, a well-known semiconductor consulting firm, pointed out that Chinese cloud companies currently purchase about 80% of high-end AI chips from Nvidia, and this proportion may drop to 50~60% in the next five years.

According to the news, Huawei has obtained a pre-order of at least 5,000 Ascend 910B chips from a major Chinese customer in 2023. After testing, the latter is regarded as the closest Chinese alternative to Nvidia A100. Ascend 910B is expected to begin delivery in 2024, but Huawei is still facing production capacity constraints due to U.S. sanctions.
